A Village Moved Away From Its River in 1870
St. Joseph's original 1849 settlement sat on the Salt Fork River as Kelly's Ford, but the entire village relocated a mile and a half north to its present, rail-chosen site by 1870, organizing formally in 1881. Crawl spaces beneath homes on that relocated site have a different water-table relationship than the original riverside settlement did.

Homes built soon after St. Joseph's 1870 relocation have had a long time to develop moisture and settlement issues beneath their crawl spaces, even without direct river proximity. Encapsulation planning in the village's older blocks should account for that layered construction history.
